Setting

What Happens in the Horizon Zero Dawn Story?

In 2033, Ted Faro creates Faro Automated Solutions and hires Doctor Elizabeth Sobeck who is known for her intelligence in robotics. They begin to create war machines and the Doctor has enough and quits to create green earth-friendly robots. However, Faro’s war machines consistently replicate and consume all of Earth’s biomass. Ted Faro lost control of its automated “peacekeeper” military robots. These robots could self-replicate and duplicate and consumed biomass as fuel, and eventually stripped the Earth of all life.

Dr. Sobeck fronted the Project Zero Dawn project to create an automated terraforming system that would shut down the robots and restore the natural order of life on planet earth. Dr. Sobeck creates Gaia and AI, who are overseen by Alphas to begin reinhabiting the earth after the Faro disease. Dr. Sobeck sacrifices herself to keep the locations safe from the plague of war machines. Faro ends up destroying the remaining Alphas. Gaia facilities and Elteuhtia continue to transform and begin to create humans artificially. Years later a signal is sent to Gaia which causes the machine to act with malfunctions. At the same time, a disheveled and rogue AI named Hades attempts to overtake Gaia and in defense, Gaia hits a button to start a self-destruct mode.

Move forward to the 31st century, humans were made into 3 main tribes: The Nora, Carja, and Oseram. These tribes coexist on Earth with robotic machines but confusion to the system has caused more aggression and violence in the actions of the machines. In 3021, Aloy was discovered as a baby and she was found as an infant at the foot of a sealed door. The Nora tribe took her in but is soon to be outcasted by the tribe and an outsider named Rost raised her. Rost trains Aloy to become a great hunter. One day, Aloy falls into an old ruin. While inside, she acquired a Focus, an augmented reality device that assisted her and grants her special perception abilities. At the same time, war breaks between Nora and Carja tribes.

Rost takes his time training Aloy for the Proving which is a tournament that tests both balance and strength between adolescents with enemies. She competes in the Proving to win the right to become Nora Brave and a member of the tribe. Aloy wins but instead of her grand prize, the Nora tribe is attacked by a cult known as the Eclipse. Rost sacrifices himself and dies to save Aloy. When Aloy finally awakens, the matriarch tells her that the cultists are controlling the corrupted monsters. Aloy finds out that she’s targeted because she resembles Dr. Sobeck.

Then Aloy finds the remnants of Faro’s robots, learns about Project Zero Dawn and Silences talks to her about the base underneath the Citadel. Aloy enters Dr. Sobeck’s old office and locates the door from which she was born but is taken by the Eclipse leader, Helis. He sentences her to death. Silence helps her to escape and Aloy and the Nora tribe fight the Eclipse cult. Then Aloy finds a recording from Gaia that explains Hades’ attempt to destroy life as well as revealing that Aloy is Dr. Solbeck’s clone. Silence then admits that he’s the original creator of the Eclipse cult and was tempted by Hades after he promised Silence knowledge. Hades’ plan is to reactivate Faro’s robots and bring upon Earth’s extinction.

Aloy fights waves of corrupted machines, and eventually stabs and kills Hades. The war is finally over and Aloy travels to Dr. Solbeck’s old home and finds her dead body. Hades is still alive but trapped by Silence. Silence’s plan is to ask Hades a bunch of questions in hopes to discover who initially sent the signal activating Hades. That’s the story of Horizon Zero Dawn.
