Since the birth of the internet, webcamming quickly became industrialised. Even in the early forums, way before YouTube was invented, there would be a supply and demand of democratised adult entertainment.
But in 2024, where everybody is looking over their shoulder at AI, even camgirls are now asking: Are they coming for my job too?
The webcamming industry is a billion-dollar industry, with many performers earning six figures – and some much more. Websites like Tempted.com make it extremely easy to sign up and start building a following, and millions do.
It was the improvement in technology that allowed for two-way communication and requests that really monetized things. Pre-recorded content would still do well, but many fans want to interact and build a relationship. It’s more intimate that way.
Unsurprisingly, it didn’t take long before AI became pornified. There are subreddits with hundreds of thousands of community members that scroll computer-generated (but very life-like) adult content. In some instances, you wouldn’t know that it isn’t real.
This begs the question of how AI will be implemented as a webcamming experience. It’s inevitable that there will be the ability to prompt your AI-generated fantasy to be – or do – whatever you want it to. In fact, it won’t be a matter of finding the right one, like it is finding the right camgirl/boy, but building your perfect one. This is a threat to webcammers.
Where human camgirls may not be quite so worried is that it may be a little too easy. For many, it is the art of winning over the camgirl, or building a relationship that develops over time. Of course, AI is able to speak, and this will only get more realistic. But will it replace the human connection, knowing that you’re interacting with a human?
On paper, AI camgirls will be more interactive, more available, and almost certainly cheaper. But, that doesn’t mean it will replace them. What’s more likely is that people will experiment with both, but ultimately the craving for a human will always remain. They may get tricked in moments, but users will know in the back of their minds the reality – or unreality – of their experience.
Camgirls face challenges from AI, but they cannot compete with it. No, quite literally, they shouldn’t bother competing, and instead frame the service as something totally separate. AI may be a way to play out a fantasy, but camgirls should lean into their unique qualities by building a strong personable brand. One with character and personality, that doesn’t always rush to fulfil requests or act robotic.
In summary, those relying on webcamming for their income may rightly be worried, but they needn’t give up. AI entertainers will never fully replace humans, and it may also be an opportunity. Imagine a scenario in which the camgirl uses AI – perhaps throwing herself into a virtual world (a mixed reality) to play out unique scenes at the request of users…
