9gag NSFW: my two cents

Mr. Porn Geek was one of the original folks on Reddit, so I think you can probably guess what my general thoughts and feelings are on 9gag. Still, I have to consider the places out there that people enjoy for content and 9gag is hardly a small player in this space, so yeah – that’s why the review here is going to be focusing on their NSFW section. I’ve never actually used 9gag before, so it’ll be interesting to see what the experience is like. Anyway, let’s venture on over to 9gag now and see what their deal is – read on for my complete review.

First thoughts on 9gag

So after landing on the NSFW page for 9gag, you’re presented with a long list of posts that cover various niches and areas of interest. While I hate to start first thoughts off with some negative analysis, I really dislike the fact that I have to sign up in order to see the NSFW material that 9gag has to offer. This type of thing really pisses me off, because I’m just looking to look at some memes and yeah – you’re forcing me to hand over an email address in order to do that. You also can’t use temporary emails, which is fucking scummy that they even bothered to check for that. Why do web services insist on this approach? I’m fuming.

The 9gag NSFW content reel

After finally signing up to 9gag with my main Gmail account, I headed on over to the NSFW area. Featured here was a clip of a guy dressed like Hitler at a bar, a top-half head shot of a girl sucking on a dick looking up at the camera (no dick shown), a longer video from a movie and some other dumb jokes and whatever else. I’ll be honest with you: 9gag really fucked me off in so many ways and I’m going to explain the biggest one down below that totally blows my mind.

If you decide to operate a website where clips can be accessed, you better damn well make sure that accessibility with those clips is incredibly high. With 9gag, you’re unable to go forwards and backwards: you can only mute or unmute the content. This means that if you see 10 seconds of something you enjoy in a 60-second clip, you can’t just watch it over and over again by clicking a timeline. Hell, you can’t even PAUSE a clip while it’s going off – how much of a pain in the ass is that? Mr. Porn Geek has noticed the same thing with MP4s from Imgur and videos from Instagram: they don’t give you control like GFYCat does. For that reason, I’m going to go ahead and just say that 9gag sucks in pretty much every regard. I know people rail on this place, but it’s for a reason: the interface, features, content and users all suck.

Conclusion on 9gag’s NSFW category

Using this website is a complete pain in the ass. Signing up to look at some dumb images was a complete joke and yeah – I just don’t think that 9gag is ever going to get my respect because of so many issues that I noticed in the first 5 minutes of using this place. Even just the fact that the ‘NSFW’ section isn’t devoted completely to porn is a good enough reason to give this place a bad review. What are the users here doing? Uploading Hitler GIFs and whatever else. Dumb stuff. Do yourself a favor and look elsewhere, friends: 9gag isn’t going to give you the goodies you desire.
